Mist Rage

525 HP

FF4Ultima Mist Rage.png This battle operates very closely to the Mist Dragon with a few notable exceptions: Mist Rage's attack power is quite a bit higher than the Mist Dragon and will counter with Cold Mist ("Don't you dare Jump!") if Kain uses Jump; this attack is extremely powerful. Its other moves are physical attacks and the less dangerous Icy Mist, which will get weaker as you keep attacking because its power is based on the boss' current HP. It will not change to mist form so you are always OK to attack it. (If you haven't gotten any Wind Spears from drops yet, you can have Kain unequip his since Cecil can still get some use out of it later.) Have Cecil and Kain both attack normally and heal as required. Cecil and Kain's default equipment 10-11 Mist
Vulture

12,000 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Vulture.png Have Cecil and Cid attack the 3 Cockatrice until they are defeated. Yang should have 2 Thunder Claws equipped and use Focus on the Vulture or alternatively Kick to get rid of all the Cockatrices and then switch to Focus. Tellah can attack with Lit3 or heal as required. Cecil can also assist with healing after the Cockatrices are destroyed. Vulture can use Petrify so make sure to offset that before it stones a character. It won't last long with Yang and Tellah hitting its weaknesses. If you managed to get the Thunder Sword already, Cecil can rip the Vulture apart with it. Cid's Beam Tool deals 1,200 guaranteed damage to the Vulture. Standard equipment will work but Lightning-elemental weapons will hit for big damage; the Vulture is also weak to Wind/Projectiles. Thunder Arrows can hit both weaknesses. 20-25 Troia Chocobo Village
Magma Giant

24,000 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Magma Giant.png Magma Giant will use Erupt (AoE Fire attack dealing 20% of max HP damage), Magma Ray which will hit all party members for Fire-elemental damage, and the Beamers will use Beam (10% of max HP damage) as a single attack. Start by focusing your attacks on the 3 Beamers (Titan works very well). Beam attacks can pile up easily especially if they focus on a single person so have Rosa and Cecil heal as required.

Yang can do heavy damage with Ice Claws and Focus (he should be able to hit 14,999 damage on a crit), Rydia should summon Ramuh or cast Lit2/3 for max damage to the Beamers, then switch to Ice2/3 or Shiva once the Giant is isolated, while Kain Jumps. Magma Giant will sometimes counter Ice spells with Ice2 of his own. He is also weak against Lightning so Cecil can really hurt him with the Thunder Sword equipped. The Dwarf Hammer also works well as it deals extra damage against robots, which all of the enemies in this fight qualify as, including the Magma Giant.

Equipment can vary if you've managed to get lucky drops or have explored outside the "normal" areas. Equipment acquired from either Silvera or the Dwarf Castle will be sufficient. Be careful about using Flame Armor or Shield as this makes you weak to Fire. If you have the Thunder Sword, use it. 25-30 Lower Tower of Babil
Warmech

44,444 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Warmech.png Warmech will use Beam (damage = 10% of your max HP) against all party members. Laser is high damage against a single unit based on Warmech's current HP (usually 1 shot KO), and AtomicFire (Erupt) deals 20% max HP Fire damage (10% if resisted). Focus attacks on the Last Arm first to prevent it from Stopping party members with ElectroMg. You really do not want anyone getting Stopped in this fight. Once the Last Arm is defeated, leverage high-level spells and attacks on Warmech.

Rosa should heal, Rydia can use Nuke or heal with Asura (if acquired). If she has Bahamut, use that instead. FuSoYa should also use Nuke or heal as necessary; Cecil can attack or assist with support magic/items (e.g. Ether) while Edge Throws any high-level items available. Once Warmech has been defeated, focus high-level attacks on the Searcher as it will summon Last Arms. Using AoE magic (Meteo, Ultima, Bahamut) will cause the Last Arm and Searcher to fall quickly and the Warmech will start using more damaging Beam/Laser attacks. Watch out for AtomicBlast, which drops your entire party to less than 10 HP.

All 3 monsters can use Fission as a final death attack to do single, high level damage to one character. The damage is equal to their remaining HP, similar to Explode.

Standard equipment from the Feymarch and related areas will be enough. Ideally Cecil should have Excalibur and Edge have a supply of throwing weapons. 40-55 Giant of Babil
Zemus' Spirit

21,800 HP

FF4Ultima Zemus Spirit.png Zemus' Spirit will use attacks like Blaze that deals 20% max HP damage to the party. Follow-up attacks are level 3 elemental spells that can cause decent damage (up to 3,000 HP to a character), as well as high level physical attacks. Level depending, groups can withstand this assault but if the damage becomes overwhelming, use Wall, Light and/or Lunar Veils to reflect the attacks. Spirit will also use Condemn as a counter to magic/summons which can be problematic if you have the Battle Speed set to 1. Most dangerously, it can inflict Charm with Glance so immunity to Charm is vital (use HeadBands).

Having Rosa cast Slow or using a Silk Web can also cause the damage to be a bit more manageable. Beyond that, standard tactics apply: Rosa/Porom heal and use Holy/Ultima, Rydia can summon Bahamut or Asura for attack/healing, Palom casts Nuke or Starfall, Edge attacks or Throws high-level items, Kain Jumps, Yang uses Focus, and Cecil attacks and offers support (Healing or Ethers/Elixirs as required).

Any set of equipment that helps reduce elemental magic. Charm protection is vital to avoid a cheap game over from a confused spellcaster. 50+ Lunar Subterrane

Gilgamesh

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Gilgamesh.png The first two battles cannot be won so focus on staying alive. After a few rounds, Gilgamesh will retreat. In the meantime he will attack which deals Dark and Mute, and counterattacks with Mini and Piggy. In the second fight, he adds a Jump attack to the mix and drains HP with physical attacks.

During the third battle, Gilgamesh will use variations of his "Caliburn" attack: Single attack, double attack, or an attack that hits all party members. The damage Caliburn does is always equal to 1/3 of a character's max HP; for example a character with a max HP of 4,500 would always take 1,500 damage from it. There is also an attack that will restore HP to Gilgamesh based on damage. He counters physical attacks with Protect and magical attacks with Shell. Try to use defense-ignoring attacks whenever possible because of this.

This is a damage race so have Edge Throw high-level weapons, Kain can use Jump, Yang should Focus, Rydia can summon Bahamut or use Nuke, Palom casts Nuke while Rosa, Porom and Cecil can offset damage with Cure4 and Cure3/All-Potions. Edward should Sing if he has a weapon that lets him proc a strong attack song, support with items if not. You only get experience/GP for the fight if you manage to kill Gilgamesh, which is hard because the fight is scripted to end when his HP drops under 10,000. If you can hit him with an attack that deals more than 10,000 HP damage, however, you can kill him (this is easiest to do on New Game +). Whether you kill him or not in any of the fights makes no difference to the story; the aftermath of the fights play out in the same way.

After that fight, you can battle Gilgamesh any time you want in the Lunar Whale. He has Gamma and 3 Last Arms as ally and their AI is completely random and always changes (but their HP are the same as normal). Defeating him will result in him rewarding you with 32 different weapons, armor and shields, so make sure you have room in your inventory. These items are: TigerFang, Wing Edge, Tempest, Artemis Bow, Holy Lance, Ragnarok, Masamune, Lightbringer, Nightbringer, Magus Rod, Seraphic Shield, Murasame, Hyperion, FireBute, Vesper Flail, Godhand, Lustrous Sword, RisingSun, Thor Hammer, Rune Axe, Triton Hammer, Excalibur, Caliburn, Thief Glove, Dragon Whip, Gilbert Harp, Apollo Harp, Minerva Bustier, DarkGear, Glass Helmet, Stardust Rod, Sage Staff.

None are unique items, but most of them are from the Lunar Subterrane/Core and make good Throwing ammunition and if you need quick money, they can all be sold for about 1.25 million GP in total. This is also the only way to acquire the Nightbringer other than recruiting Golbez to the party.

Any equipment picked up in the Lunar Subterrane. During the first two fights, he inflicts a lot of status effects. 50-65 for the third fight, though lower levels actually make this fight easier as Caliburn does a percentage of max HP which means Cure4 will be more effective if there is less damage to heal. Thief Knife (1st) Void Stone (2nd) Caliburn (3rd) 32 listed weapons/armor (4th)
AI Mk.1

45,000 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima AI MK1.png Any weapon/spell that has an associated elemental damage type will deal no damage. Use long range weapons if you can.

Like the fight with the CPU in the Giant of Babil, the Attackers will use Maser to damage all party members, while the Defenders will use Recover. The AI Mk.1 will also join in the attack using Beam and eventually Laser. Destroying all the orbs will cause AI Mk.1 to attack with Globe199 which deals 14,999 damage. It absorbs all elemental magic and weapons but unlike the CPU and the AI, it does not apply Wall to itself. This means that you can use non-elemental spells like Nuke against it. Most summons should be avoided as they tend to hit the companion orbs. When it falls below 1/3 health (15,000 HP) it can continuously Recover the companion orbs so make sure to attack the Defender immediately.

As much as possible, use back row-ignoring attacks like Jump and Throw as well as non-elemental single-target spells so you're dealing as much damage as you can. Physical attackers should use non-elemental weapons; at the time you fight it the strongest non-elemental weapon you're likely to have is the Hyperion Gunblade, and the game conveniently puts one in a treasure chest right next to the boss, so that's what Cecil and Kain should use. Yang or Edward can equip the Spoon (make sure that Yang doesn't have an elemental claw in his other hand). Everyone else should be either healing (Rosa, Porom) or blasting the boss with non-elemental magic. Since you can hit the boss relatively easily due to its lack of Wall, it shouldn't take long to finish it off as long as you don't get overly aggressive and destroy all the companion orbs first.

Zemus + Illusions

65,500 HP (Zemus) 55,535 HP (Illusions)

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Zemus.png Both Illusions will start by using spells like Drain, Stop, Gravity and weak level 2 elemental spells until they're hit by magic. At this time, Zemus will say "Magic, huh? I'll show you!" and both will counter with Fast, Wall, and Revitalize. Next they'll inflict Curse on your whole party with Hex and can also cast Virus, Erupt and Blaze. Continued use of magic against them will cause them to start bouncing level 3 spells off themselves to hit the party for high damage (2,000-3,500 HP). Occasionally they will use Condemn which can cause a character to quickly drop if the Battle Speed is set to 1. Try to destroy both Illusions at the same time so Zemus can't revive them.

While it's possible to go at a slow pace with attacks only, using a lot of AoE Magic will cause both to quickly drop as long as it evades Wall; Summons are great for this. It's not a bad idea to start the fight spending a few rounds layering up magic defense buffs (Big Guard, MT Shell, Salved Elf Cloaks) before you start attacking so you can lay into them with your best spells without needing to worry all that much about the spells they cast back at you. Zemus and his Illusions are all weak against Holy, so weapons like the Godhand, Holy Lance, Lightbringer, Illumina, etc. will all hit very hard. For the purposes of Scanning them for your Bestiary, keep in mind Zemus has about 10,000 more HP than the Illusions do, so if you get a 55,535 HP result you know you've gotten an Illusion, and if you exclusively use AoE attacks, when they're both down Zemus should still be alive for you to scan at that time. If you want to get it out of the way sooner, try pressing up/down when the Scan cursor is on their combined sprite and you should get a different target result.

Zeromus EG

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima ZeromusEG.png Zeromus EG has a very different AI script from the normal version; he starts the fight with a physical attack, then uses Tornado, then another physical attack, before eventually reverting to the Big Bang / Black Hole loop that the normal version uses. The principal difference is that he is far more aggressive with counterattacks; he will counterattack everything you do to him, which the original did not do. Physical attacks and skills will get an ST Virus counter, he'll use Nuke in response to any Esper summons, while any Holy-elemental spells (Pearl, White, Holy, Meteo) will be countered with Tornado and all other spells get an MT Bio counter. Tornado is obviously very dangerous because of the HP Sap inflicted by Virus, Bio and Big Bang so Holy spells should be avoided, just like normal Zeromus, but the fact that he always uses it on the second turn of the fight is also a good reason to hold off attacking until afterwards to ensure nobody gets killed by it.

Once Zeromus EG settles into the main Big Bang / Black Hole script, the fight will be just like the normal Zeromus fight; Cecil attacks and heals as needed, Kain Jumps, Edge Throws, Rosa and Porom heal, Rydia Calls Bahamut or Neo Bahamut, Palom casts Flare or Quasar, Yang uses Focus, Edward attacks or Sings the Starfall Serenade (Loki Harp), and Golbez uses Blue (50% chance of 13,000+ damage from Blaze or Erupt). You will just need to place greater emphasis on healing mostly because of the Bio counters provoked by using magic against him. Unlike the regular version, he doesn't get the refill to full health when dropping below 16,000 HP for the first time, and his defense isn't as high, so while he will hit you hard and frequently with all his counters, he will also die very quickly if you use your best attacks, especially if your levels are maxed out from fighting superbosses and Boss Rush.

Magissa

35,790 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima v11.52025.png Magissa is not only very fast but also difficult to do lasting damage to, because her physical attacks drain HP from your characters. As a nod to FFV, they can also poison you. She also has level 2 elemental spells to bring to bear that hit for 250-500 HP damage, can cast Sleep, and blind the whole party with Powder. She can also use Vampire to inflict HP Sap and Entangle to paralyze, and this all means if you're fighting her pre-Tower of Zot you may have trouble keeping Tellah upright and getting worn down by her nonstop HP stealing. Finally, she can repeatedly summon a Mad Ogre (as a stand-in for her husband Forza) to the fight, which is easily dispatched by a properly equipped Yang but puts Magissa in the back row until you kill it, further limiting your ability to damage her. That's a serious problem because she will start using Absorb when her HP gets low; it functions like later FFs' White Wind, healing based on how much HP she currently has remaining.

Cid is an MVP candidate for this fight because one of his Tools commands, Beam, always deals 10% of the target's max HP in damage every turn he gets. The rest of the party just needs to deal more damage than Magissa can heal for; Yang equipped with the Kaiser is ideal against the Mad Ogre, and Focus is devastating against both. Cecil should be attacking with the best sword available, but he may need to be assigned to Cover Tellah to try to help keep him alive. If you wait until after Zot you switch Tellah's ability to hit with Fire 3 spells for Kain's back row-ignoring Jump attacks and Rosa's more durable and reliable healing (and back row-ignoring arrow shots). Rosa or Tellah should cast Slow once or twice if they can spare a turn for it. If you can get Magissa's HP low enough to keep Absorb from healing for more than Beam does, you've essentially won and it's just a matter of time to finish her off as long as Cid stays alive. If you wait until after the Underworld or later to do the fight, you can pretty much crush her under your heel.

Kaiser Claw is a guaranteed one-shot kill on summoned Mad Ogres. Magissa is weak against Fire so use the Flame Sword from Zot, Fire Arrows and a Fire Claw in Yang's other hand. Any equipment that protects against status ailments helps; Sleep is the most important. 25+ Deep Forest

Brigand Axe / Exp Ring / E-Mantle

Gamma

44,444 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima v27k Gamma.png Prior to starting the fight, cast Float on your party to pre-guard against Quake. Turning down battle speed helps a lot especially at lower levels.

Gamma follows a short but brutal pattern: Wall, Erupt, Blaster, Heat Ray, ElectroMg, Laser, heal for 4,444 HP with Vitalize and repeat, so have 1-2 characters (Rosa Cure 4, Cecil Cure 3 or Rydia Asura) on healing duty. Blaster kills if it hits; Laser will most likely kill as well unless Gamma is almost dead. Anyone who gets hit with ElectroMg will be unable to act for a long period of time; you can either deliberately kill and revive them, or use a Time Egg to restore them to motion. (Wait until after Laser to use the Time Egg so you don't waste it on a character who'd just wind up getting killed anyway.) The first part of the fight is the most dangerous, because once you drop it under 32,768 HP, Gamma will add three new moves--Quake (2-3,000 HP damage which probably means a game over unless you're overleveled), Black Hole, and Maser--to its routine. Paradoxically this actually makes the fight easier since the boss will take longer to come back around to ElectroMg and Laser again, so you want to get it down under 32,768 HP as fast as you can. Float will prevent Quake from dealing damage.

Kain should Jump as it will prevent him from taking damage or getting Stopped while Edge should throw Shuriken or Ninja Stars. Rosa should cast Wall on someone (or someone should use a LightVeil to get Wall status) for two reasons: This way you can bounce Slow off that person onto Gamma, buying you more time, and it effectively makes them immune to Blaster and Laser. Putting Berserk and Fast on Cecil will let him pile up damage quickly as long as he has a good weapon (Thunder Sword from Mt. Heavensward, Defender from the Ice Cavern or Lustrous Sword from the Sealed Cave are potential options). After Gamma negates your Float with Black Hole, make sure to reapply it before it comes back around to Quake again; you have plenty of time to do so (reapply Berserk too!). Gamma is tough but predictable, and if you have the right equipment you should be able to handle it. If it's too much for you before Rubicant, try again after coming back from the Underground with better equipment and spells and things should be a lot easier.

If you attempt this fight as soon as you get the Airship hook, ensure you have the equipment from the Ice Cavern and Mt. Heavensward. If you have the equipment from Cave Bahamut and the Feymarch, so much the better. If after the Giant of Babil, any of the end-game items. Fire resistance helps mitigate Erupt and Heat Ray. 45-60 (equipment depending) Cave Eblan

Wing Edge / 5x Ninja Stars

Calofisteri

47,300 HP

FF4Uv12Calofisteri.png As with most of the other new optional bosses, Calofisteri is much faster than you. After setting up a Wall, the boss will start spamming full-party Virus spells nonstop on you for around 400-500 HP damage; it will also use a full-party Drain to siphon off HP from your characters, and will also hit you with Hex to cause full-party Curse status AND Poison Gas to poison everyone. It also spams Vampire, which doesn't hurt as bad as Virus but does start HP Sap. The combination of Wall, the damage cut from Curse and constantly stealing your party's HP makes it a chore to bring the boss's HP down, and when you do manage to bring it down it will switch to single-target Virus spells which can easily one-shot a character with less than 2,000 HP. Mindblow (ST Stun + HP Sap) will also make an appearance at this point. The final phase of the fight ends the ST Virus spam but introduces ST Drain and Vampire spam in its place. If you can take a hit of 800 HP or more you shouldn't get one-shot now. Throughout all phases of the fight, Calofisteri can toss in physical attacks as well. Dead characters will not have Poison status when revived, but Curse does persist through death and revival; you can only get rid of it with a Heal or Remedy (or winning). Because Hex and Poison Gas are counters, you're going to be best off playing defensive at first and stacking magic defense buffs with MT Shell from Rosa plus Cecil's Fortify. That should reduce Vampire and Drain to a negligible amount of damage and possibly make Virus survivable. If you have the ElvenBow, you can use it as an item to cast Shell as well (this is best done with Rydia). Wait to start attacking until you've sufficiently buffed your party's magic defense.

It's not a bad idea to cast Wall on someone and bounce the strongest spells you have off him/her. Full-party healing spells will be reflected to the boss but restore very little HP so it's not a big irritation. However, you'll have to rely on items to heal the character with the Wall. Try to have Kain Jump as much as possible; it deals the most damage and helps him avoid getting hit, so it's one less person to heal. Equip him with the Judgement Hammer if you have it to exploit the boss' Holy weakness. Rydia can also summon Mist as it will fly past Wall and also hits Calofisteri's weakness to Holy, but Rydia's HP needs to be as full as possible for best effect. If Edge is in your party, he'll probably need to Throw something to do some decent damage. You may have to go semi-turtle to survive the Virus onslaught; in this phase designate one person to deal damage (Rydia with reflected spells if Wall is up, Kain with Jump if it isn't) while everyone spams Life potions to heal Calofisteri's most recent victim. You probably won't be at high enough level to survive the Virus shots even at max HP, so don't bother trying to restore HP; just keep resurrecting whomever falls so the boss can't kill you faster than you can resurrect. Once you get past the Virus stage (less than 11,825 HP remaining) you can start to focus on getting everyone's HP back up. Keep dealing damage, however, so the boss doesn't get a chance to heal enough to go back to Virus spam. Try to get a few reflected Slows on the boss at the start of the fight before you start attacking to make it easier to deal with. If you are under level 40 you are probably going to need to use some All-Potions, Ethers and possibly Elixirs to make it through this battle as it can drag on a very long time.

If you wait until after the second visit to the Underground this fight gets much easier, as Rydia can use Leviathan or level 4 elemental spells to get past Wall with no fuss and Cecil and Rosa can both stack up Shell to mitigate Virus damage.

Ideally Rydia has at least one level 3 elemental spell to bounce off as any summons other than Mist, Leviathan and Bahamut do barely any damage. Level 4 elemental spells will also work if she knows them. High-powered offensive items like Stardust, FireBombs, Lit-Bolts and IceBlasts can be handy. Judgement Hammer/Lustrous Sword or any stronger Holy-elemental weapons are ideal. Bring a good stock of Life potions. 40-45+ Island Peak

20x Artemis Arrows / Seraphic Shield

Tunnel Armor

44,444 HP

Final Fantasy IV Ultima Tunnel Armor.png Tunnel Armor only uses physical-type attacks, and counters your physicals with physicals of its own. However, that's a big problem, because its physicals are random one hit kills in addition to their high damage. If you see the message "Dispatched!" come up when it attacks you, the character it attacked is about to eat dirt no matter how much HP they had. The other thing you have to watch out for is Drill Pins, which can't be blocked or avoided and hits for over 1,000 HP damage. The final attack in its arsenal is an attack that looks like Yang's Kick and hits the whole party; it does not have the instant kill chance that the normal attacks do, but it now ignores defense so Protect has no effect on it--expect it to hit everyone for 800-900 damage. Its pattern is two physical attacks with ID chance, Drill Pins, full-party attack, repeat. The idea to defeat it is to avoid attacking physically so it won't counter you, stack up Image status on as many people as you can to mitigate the damage and hoping that the RNG doesn't hand you a lot of cheap instant deaths. Try to use a Silk Web or cast Slow on it twice to limit its onslaught.

The boss's previous weakness to lightning has been reversed; now it will absorb lightning and be healed by it! This includes random spell procs from physical attacks with weapons like the Thunder Sword and Thor/Judgement Hammers too, so avoid using them. Cecil should be casting MT Cure2 the entire fight unless he has Big Guard, in which case he should use that instead. Rosa is better served to heal with Cure3/4, but if everyone has good HP she should also cast Blink to dodge the physicals entirely. Edge should either be Throwing (skills don't trigger a counterattack) or casting Image on himself for protection. Kain should also cast Blink to help get everyone protected, then attack with Jump so as to not trigger a counter. Rydia should use Nuke if she has it; if not, use Ice3/Fire3 or her best summon (avoid using Lit spells or Ramuh). This is a great fight to use Decoys for quick Image status, but keep in mind they will not avoid Drill Pins. You can steal a Glass Helmet from Tunnel Armor, if Edge can spare a turn to do it. As changes to the boss' damage algorithms no longer make Protect much use for the fight, Blink/Image is your key to victory since you can have three people capable of casting it, as is prompt healing after the full-party attack.

Lightning-elemental weapons should not be used as Tunnel Armor can absorb it. Physical defense takes priority over magic defense. If you have anything that can nullify instant death status (the tombstone icon), equip it. 45-50+ Beach Cave North of Baron

Ultima Weapon

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima UltimaW.png Ultima Weapon has been relocated to a new dungeon, Cave Moore, for Version 2022 (it is located northwest of the Lunar Path entrance, or north-northeast from Cave Bahamut). It starts the fight using Ultima (which may not hit everyone) and then quickly follows up with Meteo. Depending on your level of luck, this may end in a total KO or restart. For the beginning of the fight, Ultima will use Nuke, Blaze, Crush (may not cause an instant KO), Virus, and Tsunami; all of these are high-damaging attacks. It can also use Mindblow to set HP Sap (the Ultima spell also does this.)

Once that phase is complete, he'll use Ultima and Meteo again but often, the characters hit are reduced. As the battle presses on, he'll add Whirlwind to the mix, as well as a double physical attack. Again, all high-damaging attacks. You want to use a Silk Web on it immediately to slow its attacks down.

Because of Ultima's powerful attacks, staying on the defense is key. Rosa should be using Cure4 every turn with Rydia summoning Asura if required (though remember, she has a 1/3 chance of using Reinforce versus Refresh/Renew). Kain should Jump as much as possible to get out of the line of fire, Edge should Throw high-level weapons, and Cecil can act as an ancillary healer (Cure 3, All-Potions and/or Elixirs) for Rydia/Rosa. If everyone has full HP he should use Big Guard to boost your defense and Magic defense. Edward can Salve Elf Cloaks or healing items as needed, Yang should Brace to get physical immunity and then use Focus, Porom is good to back up Rosa as an insurance policy. Palom is a riskier option but if you want to try for a quick rushdown he can hit the boss hard. Fusoya and Golbez can both deal tremendous damage to the boss using Blue; W.Meteo and Firegale will deal 4,000-7,000 damage, Snowstorm always deals 13,107 damage, and Blaze will inflict max (16,383) damage, but they may have trouble staying alive to cast it.

Like many of the end-game bosses, a slow approach tends to work better than an all-out blitz attack and taking a gamble (e.g. having Rosa cast Ultima versus healing if the party is full) can quickly cause a game over. However, when the boss is near death it will use a two-step attack of Meteo followed by Vitalize. At this point you need to get aggressive before its combination of powerful attack and self-heal wears you down.

It is now possible to challenge Ultima Weapon prior to the Giant of Babil, but it is extremely risky as you won't have strong weapons, armor or spells yet. There are no cheese strategies for Ultima Weapon, so know if you're going to try at that point your odds of success are not good, even if you bring Fusoya with you and completed Cave Bahamut.

Any and all gear from the Lunar Subterrane/Core. Meteo is Holy-elemental so pairing Holy resistance with Cursed Rings lets you absorb it. You can do the same with Blaze and Ice resistance. 55+ Cave Moore

Raiden

65,535 HP

FF4Ultima Raiden.png Unlike Odin who will use Atom Edge after a set period of time, Raiden will use this out of the gate so the player must strike Raiden with a Lightning-elemental item or spell as soon as he raises his sword. Once hit, Raiden will say "Agh..." and his attack power will drop significantly and only do a few hundred damage to the party. In the meantime, slow him down with a Silk Web so you can pound on him for a bit. Hyperions can be stolen from him but it's not really worth it to do so.

Raiden will then raise his sword once more, and the player must strike him with Lightning again. Failure to do so before Raiden uses Atom Edge will deal 9,000+ damage to the entire party.

Edge can use Blitz and Rydia and Palom can use any Lit spell to achieve this effect. Others must use items that produce a Lightning effect. As the battle goes on, Raiden will get faster so ideally, you'll alternate a powerful attack with a Lightning attack. Note that unlike Odin, he does not actually take extra damage from Lightning, so use your weakest items like ZeusRage rather than waste Lit-Bolts, and cast low-level Lit spells rather than waste MP on Lit 3 or 4. Otherwise, just use your strongest attacks as he has no weaknesses and does not counter you. Just watch for when he raises his sword.

Equipment is less important in this fight but anything that grants increased agility will help you keep up with Raiden. 50+ Lunar Subterrane

Movers

45,000 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Movers.png The Movers must all be destroyed at the same time. If any one of the three are left alive they will quickly revive the dead ones back to full HP. This means using exclusively AOE attacks so it's best to bring a team full of mages.

After shuddering on their first turn, the back Mover will use Embrace (restores HP but turns you to stone immediately); it's a wasted turn if it hits someone with Petrify protection. The other two will attack; it drains HP and inflicts Charm so you must have Charm immunity, as time is of the essence and you cannot afford losing control of anyone. They will keep doing this, only changing which one uses Embrace, until you start casting magic on them. Once your spells start hitting them, they will Wall themselves and then reflect Laser onto you. This is why it is essential you rush them down as fast as you can; the more HP you take off of them, the less damage Laser will do. If you get unlucky and someone with low max HP gets hit, you may be in trouble, because their next move is to use Demolish (instant death). They will then use Burst, Needle, and start over with Laser if you somehow haven't died or killed them yet.

Palom and Rydia should be casting high-level AOE spells and summons such as Quasar and Bahamut (Meteo takes too long to cast and Bio doesn't hit very hard). Porom and Rosa should cast Ultima. Cecil and anyone else in the party should use high-level attack magic items that hit all enemies. Edward can Salve an Antimatter so it hits all three of them; the others should use Void Stones or Stardust. Don't use a Globe199, you need to save them for Neo Bahamut.

Skip turns to the people with the longest cast times (e.g. Rosa and Porom with Ultima) and have them start first. Start Rydia and Palom next; Bahamut and Quasar both have identical cast times. Watch your mages' ATB bars and when they're close to full, have Cecil cast Scan for the Bestiary and anyone else in the party start using their attack items. The idea is to have everything go off at the same time so they die (or are at least severely weakened) before they can get to the dangerous parts of their pattern. Don't waste time buffing your defense, just unload on them with your strongest spells.

The only one making any effort to revive people who get killed should be Cecil; everyone else needs to keep firing off their strongest spells and keep the pressure on. Make sure you're using spells and summons that will pass through Wall, so items, Ultima, Quasar or Bahamut only. If you can get three or four hits of Bahamut/Quasar plus an Ultima or two or a good spell-casting item hit, that should be enough to get rid of them. If any one of the three survives, focus fire on it immediately as you have maybe one shot to kill it before it revives the others (use VoidStones or AntiMatters). Adamant Armor is your friend here, as it will protect you from everything except Laser.

The Movers can be encountered as a random battle on any floors of the Core where the battle music does not change. The treasure encounter cannot be run from, but the random encounters can and should be. Only fight Movers if you absolutely need to. If you want to tempt fate that badly, you can get a fight with them any time by using a Siren in the Omega Sector of the Tower of Babil. In any case, no matter where you fight them, always save first.

Charm protection is mandatory. Stone and/or Instant Death protection is recommended. Otherwise wear anything that boosts Will and Wisdom because you want maximum magical damage. 70+ Lunar Core

Magus Rod

Goddess

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Goddess new.png Goddess starts the fight by using White against a single person which causes high, likely fatal damage. Most of her attacks will either be Glance (Charm), Embrace (instant Stone) or Slap (random Stun, Curse or Mute). If your party has protection against these statuses then all you need to do is worry about her use of White/Pearl and double physical attack (1,000+ damage to the front row). If not, make sure to use Remedies and Heal to keep your team operational. She can also use Whisper to inflict Piggy on the whole party at once. She counters any magic cast against her with MT Petrify.

As the battle goes on, Goddess will start countering physical attacks with Cure4, which can be used to your advantage if you cast Wall on her (similar to Asura). This will cause her to heal your team while you continue to pile on the damage: Kain Jumps, Edge Throws high-level weapons, Yang uses Focus, Rydia Calls Raiden or Bahamut, Palom casts Nuke or Starfall, Rosa/Porom can heal or use Ultima, and Cecil should be the one to Scan Goddess for the Bestiary and then act as a healing tank. Remember that Piggy disables magic but not other commands like Throw, so if the status doesn't interfere with what you're trying to do, don't bother wasting turns healing it. Slow her down with a Silk Web to make her more manageable.

When she is under 21,845 HP she will say "Impressive..." and blast you with ST Holy while following it up by buffing her defenses with Mighty Guard and healing herself for 6,554 HP with Vitalize on the same turn. Try to get her down quickly so she can't heal out of it.

With protection from Charm and Stone, this can be one of the easier fights because Holy doesn't hit more than one character at a time and Charm is ineffective so a setup that protects against both can make this fight much more manageable. If you have Golbez, he can really hurt Goddess as his Nightbringer sword is Dark-elemental and he can Call Shadow, Witch or Raiden for heavy Dark damage, but that requires backtracking all the way back to her through the whole dungeon again.

Anything that can offset Charm (HeadBands and/or Adamant Armor). Additional equipment that protects against status effects like Stone and Pig can also help. Holy resistance along with a Cursed Ring to absorb it neuters her most powerful attack. 60-65+ Lunar Core

AI

65,535 HP

FF4Uv12AI.png Any weapon/spell that has an associated elemental damage type will deal no damage. Use long range weapons if you can.

The attacks used by this boss are functionally the same as those of the CPU and AI Mk.1 but have been renamed; Ion Beam = Maser, Recharge = Vitalize, Overclock = Fast, ShortCircuit = Stop, Surge = LitFlash, Firewall = Big Guard and DELETE = Globe199.

The Attackers will use Ion Beam to damage all party members and Surge to damage individuals, while the Defenders will use Recharge, Firewall and Overclock on the AI and the Attackers. Destroying all the orbs will cause AI to attack with DELETE which deals 14,999 damage to two characters and then Recover all its orbs. The AI otherwise also attacks with Ion Beam and Laser. It uses Reflect at the start of the fight so there are limited spells that you can damage it with. Spells or magical items that manage to pierce its Wall will get a ShortCircuit counter. It will also counter Kain's Jump with DELETE so he should only use it on the companion orbs. It counters everything else with Ion Beam.

The biggest change to this fight versus the previous two is that Jump is no longer safe to use, and the boss can revive the Attackers/Defenders much, much faster (sometimes after 1 turn). If Edward has the Apollo Harp equipped, his Sing can slow down the companion orbs which helps slow the damage from Ion Beam and the healing from the Defenders (it won't work on AI who will reflect it back at you).

Start by getting rid of all the Attackers as they put the AI in the back row as long as they exist, then get rid of two Defenders but leave one alive so the AI doesn't go into DELETE. This will minimize your party's exposure to damage and with everyone attacking you should be able to outpace the remaining Defender's healing. Edge should Throw high-level weapons for maximum damage, everyone else can use non-elemental weapons to fight it. Two-handed characters should make sure they do not have an elemental weapon in their other hand as it will trigger the AI's immunity. Suggested weapons include Ultima Weapon/Ultima II/Ragnarok/Hyperion (Cecil, Kain, Edward, Golbez), Dragon Claw/Ninja Star (Yang), Masamune (Edge, although he really should be Throwing), and Slaying Tail (Rydia, Palom). Brave Blade/Chicken Knife also work, use whichever has higher power. Rosa and Porom will likely be too busy healing to attack. Machine-race exploiting weapons work, but most of them are elemental so it may not be worth it to try to exploit. Yang should Focus; you can also switch Cecil to Dark Knight and use Bane but be careful because the HP drain combined with the Ion Beam counters will rapidly dwindle his HP. Ideally, you'll want someone on "standby" so if all the Defenders are restored, they can be killed before they start to heal/buff AI. Because Ion Beam and Surge are both max HP percentage based, buffing defense is pointless. The only worthwhile buff to use on yourself is Fast (best applied via a Salved Hermes or Edge's Haste spell).

After you've done 5-6 rounds of attacking, it is possible to have Rydia summon Bahamut and Rosa use Ultima which will kill the companion orbs but also destroy AI before it gets off its DELETE/Recover motion.

The AI can regenerate its companion orbs rapidly when it reaches its final phase (under 21,845 HP), even if you've just destroyed them the previous round. Good idea to queue up multiple powerful spells so that they'll go off when the AI has been pushed into this HP range. Even if the spells aren't targeted to the companion orbs, if the AI is destroyed by them the remaining orbs will be easy to mop up.

  • Note: There are parts in the fight where all monster sprites will turn a pixelated yellow or red. This is based on the spells they use on that turn, and has to do with the color palettes being loaded by the game for those spells. Because the monster sprites are transparent, they get affected by the loading of this data. It does not manifest on any change to their stats or pattern, it is only cosmetic.

Like the Crystals, you can fight the AI as much as you want so if this fight gives you trouble, go back when you're fully equipped for a much easier victory and a nice boost to your ego.

Yeti

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Yeti.png Yeti will start the fight by using "ROAR" which is a strong, physical AoE attack against the party that ignores defense and will deal over 2,000 points of damage. Yeti will then use variations of SnowStorm (20% max HP Ice damage) against the party: Single use, double use, or single use and self-heal. Yeti can also self-heal with Vitalize as a single use. Slow him down with a Silk Web or Slow or you may not be able to keep up with him. Hit him with the strongest attacks and spells you have and avoid using anything Ice-elemental; Nuke, Bahamut, Flare, StarFall, Holy, Ultima, Bio, Throw, Focus, Jump etc. If he says "Huff..." he will attack physically, which you can reduce with Protect/Big Guard/ElfCloaks. If he says "Aaargh!" he will use Ice3, for 1,000-1,500 HP of damage to your whole party. If he says "Grrr.... ERRGHH!" he is going to use Absorb to restore HP (this will get less effective the more damage you do to him). When he gets below half HP he will counter you with SnowStorm upon being damaged while again yelling "Aaargh!" (he will also do this any time you hit him with a Fire spell). Try to stack multiple defense buffs up ASAP (Salved Elf Cloaks, Big/Mighty Guard, MT Protect) to minimize his physical damage and dial the battle speed down to 6 if you're having trouble staying alive. Any equipment that reduces physical attacks can make this fight go much smoother (Glass Helmet, Adamant Armor). Equipment that reduces Ice damage can help with SnowStorm and Ice3 but "ROAR" can't be mitigated. 60-65+ Ice Cave

Dragon Claw / Berserk Ring

Marilith

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Marilith Sword Rain.png Marilith will start the fight with Sword Rain against all characters which deals 2,000+ damage. The rest of the fight she'll use Sleep Gas, full-party Hex (Curse status), Mini, Charm, and Bio, a powerful AoE Virus-like spell. Marilith can also heal with Absorb and use Sword Rain against 1 character for likely-fatal damage. Her physical attacks also drain HP. If the Gorgons and Lamia Queens are destroyed, she can revive them.

Start the fight by using Bahamut to take out both Gorgons and Lamia Queens (both more annoying than anything else). If you're taking too much damage for Rosa, have Rydia fill in with Asura or Cecil with Cure 3/All-Potion. Bio hurts a lot (3,000+ damage MT) and may kill; if you can, try to Wall or LightVeil to reflect it back on her (Edward is helpful to Salve it on the whole party if he survives the opening Sword Rain), and it will also protect you from her status-inflicting spells. Silk Webs will greatly help cutting down the boss's speed. Get all your buffs and debuffs on as early as you can because when the boss hits her final phase you need to go all out attacking.

When she counter-Absorbs, this is a tipoff she's going into her final phase where she spams single target Sword Rain to kill characters. Restoring HP is pointless as it will do over 10,000 damage, so focus on reviving and attacking rather than healing. You need to get her down before she picks you off one by one. An all out assault will be best: Fast actions like Throw, Bane, Sing, Jump, and any spells that have 0 cast time such as Nuke. If multiple people are down, don't forget a Salved Life potion or Rydia's Phoenix summon can bring them all back at once.

Any endgame equipment will work, which you will have since this is post-Goddess fight. As much status protection as possible (Charm and Mini at least). 70+ Ancient Grotto

Slaying Tail / Bio Spell

Shinryu

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima v7.0d016.png Shinryu will start the fight by using SuperNova (drops everyone to single digit HP) and then uses Vitalize. He'll quickly mock you ("Are you wasting my time?") then use LitFlash on 1-2 characters. Ideally you've been able to heal with an All-Potion at this point or you'll lose 1-2 characters. At this point, Shinryu will use Whirlwind dealing 2-4,000 damage to everyone, and Thunder which can strike up to 3 times. He will telegraph Whirlwind by "shuddering" like Zeromus does before Big Bang; its damage will decrease as you do more damage to him. Do not apply Wall to anyone; if you do Shinryu will detect it and immediately slaughter you (V27 and later). His Lightning attacks cannot be absorbed because they are max HP-based, but they can be reduced with the right equipment.

As the battle goes on, Shinryu will repeat his initial pattern, eventually adding Fast and physical attacks to the mix. Every action you take against him results in a counterattack. Attacking him with plain vanilla physicals and Throwing will result in a LitFlash counter. Shinryu also will counter summons with Tidal Wave, which will get weaker as his HP drops. Jump and spells will be punished with a counter Atomic Ray which deals 3,000-5,000 damage to the entire party and can wipe you in seconds; he'll also Atomic Ray you if you try to Slow him, and wind up negating it with Fast anyway. He'll even Atomic Ray you just for daring to Scan him for his bestiary entry. You have to be very careful about hitting him because using several of the wrong kind of attack in a row can provoke multiple Atomic Rays and send the fight from completely in control to game over before you know what hit you.

To prepare for this, stack up as many buffs to your magic defense as you possibly can before you get aggressive with him; repeated Salved ElfCloaks from Edward, Big Guard from Cecil, Shell from Rosa/Porom and Boast from Palom. You can tell your magic defense is maxed out if Shell no longer shows an animation when cast; the ElfCloaks and Big Guard stop showing animations when your physical defense maxes, but they'll still buff Magic defense even if you don't see it. By maxing out your magic defense this way you can reduce Atomic Ray from party-wiper to a pinprick, letting you use the attacks and spells you want to use without regard for how Shinryu feels about it. You may want to give him a few smacks with physicals and a Throw or Summon just to reduce his Whirlwind damage a little first (since it's based on his current HP) before you start focusing on buffing. (Keep in mind these buffs will not reduce LitFlash or Thunder as they are based off a percentage of your max HP.)

When his HP gets under 25% Shinryu will counter anything that hits him with Atomic Ray, while spamming SuperNova/Vitalize until he gets back over 25% HP, at which point he will return to his previous attack pattern. SuperNova *will not miss*, nor will Atomic Ray, and nothing will mitigate the damage from SuperNova. You need to get everyone's HP high enough to be able to survive one Atomic Ray at a time, while also dealing damage to him so he can't Vitalize his way out of it. Even if you buffed your magic defense enough to get Atomic Ray down to 1 HP damage, that could still kill someone whose HP was dropped to 1 by SuperNova.

If your levels aren't at the recommended level you're going to probably need to use several All-Potions to stay alive through the final phase long enough to punch him out. Don't be surprised if you win the battle with everyone in critical HP from the constant SuperNovas. Edward, if he is in the party, should Hide for insurance in case things go pear shaped during this phase.

Another battle where slow and steady wins the race. Buffing your defenses as much as you possibly can at the start will pay huge dividends when the Atomic Rays start coming. Some luck does go into this fight and if you're having a hard time keeping the damage to the team manageable, reduce the Battle Speed so there's a bit more time between turns to react. The massive trove of new spells learned from Shinryu, plus the Illumina, make the trouble worth it.

Every best piece of equipment that you have to offer and anything that can offset lighting damage. Lots of ElfCloaks. 75+ Mt. Heavensward Summit

Tonberry

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Tonberry.png Tonberry does only one thing, and it is exceedingly efficient at it: it stabs you with knives. Its base physical attack causes random instant death on top of being high-powered, and it counters everything that hits it with Dagger, which deals damage equivalent to half a character's max HP and is non-elemental and unblockable no matter what you equip or use (a character with a max HP of 6000 will always take 3000 damage for example). Also, it spends the fight steadily advancing towards you, and like Demon Wall, when it gets close enough it will switch from random instakills to guaranteed max-damage instakills. Unlike Demon Wall, this time there's no way to game the system because its Knife move is non-elemental and therefore unabsorbable, and it gets close enough far sooner, only taking about half a dozen turns to get up in your face and start gutting and filleting you. It can also heal itself with Absorb every three turns. So this means two things: first, instant death protection is critical, if you have any armor that can fit the bill, and secondly, this is a furious damage race where you must be able to hit hard and fast. Its physical and magic defense are both extremely high so you need to use defense-ignoring attacks and spells.

Since any action you take against the Tonberry results in a Dagger to your face, you should not try to Slow it; in fact don't bother with any buffs or debuffs at all, the fight isn't going to last long enough for them to matter. You must strike quickly, immediately heal whoever got countered with Dagger, and then repeat. If someone gets killed, you should not bother reviving them unless you have someone who can cast Life2; there aren't enough turns to spend healing up people who just got revived. Jump and Focus aren't that useful as they take a precious extra turn to execute, so you want powerful attacks that come out immediately. Bio, Nuke and Flare are the best spells to use, along with high-powered Throwing from Edge and the Starfall Serenade song from Edward (equip Loki's Harp). DK Cecil's Bane will work too, but remember that if he has Caladbolg equipped he will be damaged for half his max HP after using Bane with it equipped, leaving the Tonberry in prime position to finish him off with a counter. Consider substituting a different sword for Caladbolg if you're going to use Bane. You want to keep everyone as close to full HP as possible so Cure 4, X-Potions and Elixirs are the best way to heal. If you commit to an aggressive attack/heal cycle against it you should be able to pull through before it reaches you--if it doesn't bad-luck you to death with random kills. A Salved Decoy can help take that factor out of the equation, but it will not protect from Dagger or Knife.

If you need to Scan the Tonberry to get it into your Bestiary, it is much better to do so in the initial fight than in Boss Rush, because the Boss Rush puts you up against 8 of them at the same time and you really can't afford to waste the turn.

Instant death protection is really the only thing that helps you so Adamant Armor and Ribbons are your friends. 70+ Deep Forest

Melusine

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima v27k Melusine.png Melusine has been relocated as of V32 from the Deep Forest to the Damcyan tower. At the start of the fight she will use Whirlwind, Thunder, Erupt and Blizzard on your party in succession but it will deal no damage. After this she will start changing her barrier every other turn she takes. Each time she changes her barrier she will cast Fire 4, Lit 4, Ice 4 or Storm. Whichever element she casts, you must cast back at her to damage her; any other element will heal her (this is the same way Magus from Chrono Trigger functions so if you've fought Magus you've got the idea). The problem is, she is fast enough that if you start casting a level 3 spell right when she changes her barrier you won't get it off in time before she changes it again, even if you've Slowed her with a Silk Web (which you should still do). Storm will get off in time, as will Fire/Ice/Lit 4, but they don't hit as hard. Only level 3 or 4 elemental spells will do any damage; levels 1 and 2 will only deal 1 HP of damage to her. Also, sometimes she gets healed even if you cast the same element she did because the barrier change takes effect before she actually casts the spell she's going to use, but be careful with your timing if you try to savescum; if you use her next weakness before she does, she may punish you with an instant partykill. Her barrier changes are completely random and do not follow a predictable pattern.

On turns when Melusine is not changing her barrier, she will attack physically (which drains HP and can inflict Charm), cast full-party Hex on you, or cast Charm on one character. Charm protection is going to make your life a lot easier, as will buffing your defenses, but even if you do buff Storm will still deal substantial damage to you, so be ready to cast full party heals if you need to. Her physical attacks are wildly inconsistent; they will scratch back-row characters while absolutely clobbering front-row characters, especially if Curse has been inflicted, so don't neglect buffing your physical defense too (consider Salving a Decoy). If Edge is in the party he can speed everyone up with Haste for faster reactions, or if you have Edward he can Salve a Hermes for the same effect.

Rydia and Palom should both be in the party so they can bring their elemental spells to bear. If you have Golbez bring him too, the more mages the merrier and he has superior defensive equipment so he can go in the front row. If you have only one of them in the party it will take a long time but you can win; if you have none of them you are not going to win. Everyone else should focus on healing, buffing your defenses with Elf Cloaks/Shell/Protect/Mighty Guard, or just skip their turns until they're needed to do something. If you bring FireBombs, IceBlasts, Lit-Bolts and Wind Slashes you can damage Melusine faster and give the others something useful to do. Just keep in mind that only the highest-power spells and items will deal any more than 1 damage to her. Salved Heals are the easiest way to clear Curse status.

Don't think you're going to get around the barrier by using physical and non-elemental attacks. If you try, Melusine will counter-Wall herself, Black Hole your buffs away, and then murder your party on her next turn with Eclipse. Do not cast Wall on yourself either as this will provoke the same punishment routine. As long as you fight her on her terms, she will not counterattack you and you will eventually win.

Charm protection equipment at minimum, Curse protection if you have it. Cursed Rings + elemental resistance to absorb spells is nice but not mandatory if you buff your defenses. 65+ Damcyan Castle Tower

Storm Dragon

65,535 - 109,225 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Storm Dragon new.png The Storm Dragon has undergone a substantial reworking since V29. A new location, new sprite, new drops, and far more powerful attacks have now raised it into super boss status. Very little from its previous incarnation still applies. While it has a lightning weakness now, its defense is so high that any physicals from anything other than lightning weapons (Thunder Sword/Arrows/Claw, Thor/Judgment Hammers, Godhand) will not even scratch it. Even with lightning weapons, don't expect big damage numbers except from crits or Yang's Focus attack. Also despite its name, the Storm Dragon is *not* classed as a Dragon by the game, so weapons that hit extra damage against Dragons like Artemis Arrows will not do so on this boss, nor will Dragon-resistant armor help reduce damage.

Among the Storm Dragon's attacks, it has Storm, Tornado and Whirlwind in common from its previous incarnation. Storm is absorbable with Cursed Rings and Wind-resistant equipment, but Whirlwind and Tornado cannot be absorbed. Whirlwind is based on the dragon's remaining HP, so with its higher HP pool it can deal upwards of 3,000 HP damage to the whole party at the start of the fight. The boss's physicals no longer inflict poison and blindness, but they are immensely strong, in the neighborhood of 3-4,000 damage, and they can also instantly stone a character; no gradual petrification, one hit and they're a statue--unless they have Adamant Armor in which case it will barely tickle them. Aegis Shield and Ribbon will also save you from stoning but you'll still take a lot of HP damage. When it uses Tornado, it is usually combined with Petrify in the same turn, similar to Valvalis. It also now has the ability to silently full-heal itself like Zeromus and Omega when it drops below 1/3 HP, so you may have to deal over 100,000 HP to actually defeat it, depending on how low you got it before it restored itself.

At the start of the fight use a Salved Decoy or E-Mantle to remove the boss's physicals from the equation, then Silk Web it to slow it down. Try to start attacking as soon as you can rather than worrying about buffing, because buffs won't protect you from Whirlwind and the more damage you do to the boss, the less damage you will take from it. Quick-casting spells like Nuke, Flare, Bio and Holy are all viable though you may want to have any White Magic users hang back to heal from Whirlwind and Tornado. Lit3/4 will hit for over 10,000 damage but take longer to cast. If you commit Rosa or Porom to attacking, have the non-mages distribute or Salve All-Potions or X-Potions depending on how many people need healing. Paladin Cecil can auto-Cover people who get hit by Tornado, but you still need to heal them quickly so Whirlwind won't get them. Yang should Focus, Edge should Throw, Kain should Jump, Edward should Sing with the Loki Harp and Salve items as needed.

When the dragon starts to counter-Absorb, its HP is in the range to trigger its hidden full-heal, but it will not do so until its next turn. If your levels are high enough, try to rush it down; use quick and powerful attacks and spells like Throw, Bane, Sing, or casting Nuke, Flare, Bio, Holy or White. The less HP Absorb restores, the closer it is to dying. If you are quick and hit it hard, you can end the fight here.

If you can't defeat it in time, it will give a telltale "shudder" (like Zeromus and some other bosses) and cast a silent Black Hole cancelling your Image/E-Mantle status (you need to reapply it). If this happens, it has healed itself back up to full HP and moved to its second phase. Now, instead of countering with physical attacks, it will counter with Tornado, so make your attacks count as max damage per attack is more important than speed; you should only use Throw (Edge), Focus (Yang), Bane (DK Cecil) or Jump (Kain) for physical attacks, and only the highest-power attack spells should be cast (Ultima, Quasar, Meteo, Bahamut, Flare, Lit3). Multiple uses of Cure4 and X-Potions will probably be necessary as people will constantly be getting dropped into single digit HP and Whirlwind goes back to full power with the boss's self-heal. Anyone who can't hit for at least 6,000 damage should focus on healing/reviving.

When the Storm Dragon falls under 21,845 HP the second time, it moves to its final phase. Now every attack against it will get a full-party Tornado counter, so every time you hit it, you must heal the whole party with your next action because it could follow with Whirlwind and if it does you're screwed. Like Shinryu, it's not unusual to finish the fight with everyone in critical HP.

Lightning-elemental weapons are mandatory if you want to use physical attacks. Wind and Petrify protection are best but not required. 75+ Mt. Ordeals

Omega Weapon

214,140 - 259,137 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima v27k omega.png Omega uses the same attack script as Gamma (Wall, Erupt, Blaster, Heat Ray, ElectroMg, Laser, Quake, Black Hole, Maser, repeat), but it has far more HP and attack power (it silently counter-heals itself like Zeromus when it drops below 16,384 HP the first three times). This means two things: You have to fight it considerably longer than Gamma, giving it more shots at you, and because the damage Laser inflicts is based on Omega's HP, unless you rush it down as hard as you possibly can, you're pretty much guaranteed to lose someone the first time it uses it (not to mention Blaster could kill someone too). Make sure you go into the fight with Float status to deal with Quake, and when you lose it to Black Hole, reapply it via an MT cast from Rosa, Cecil or Porom. The Stop from ElectroMg lasts a very long time so you may want to kill stopped characters and revive them to get them back in action faster (or use a Time Egg if you have them). It has a wicked new trick to play when the fight is near the end, so you should now spend some time at the start of the fight applying buffs to your magic defense until it's maxed out (repeatedly cast Big Guard, MT Shell, Salved Elf Cloaks etc.) Most of the boss's attacks are HP-based so it won't seem like it does any good, but at the end of the battle your odds of victory will be greatly improved.

FFV players may remember Omega was vulnerable to Stop in that game. If Dark Knight Cecil knows Black Hole (learned by defeating Crystal Dragon), you can pull off a similar strategy here. Speed Cecil up with Fast/Haste and have him cast Black Hole right after Omega acts, which will cancel its Wall. This will give the next person who acts after him a chance to sneak in a Silk Web to slow Omega down since its Wall is removed. This also resets Omega's AI, causing it to cast Wall again on its next turn. With it Slowed and you Hasted, Cecil should be able to get another turn just in time to cast Black Hole again and lock Omega into a loop of trying to restore its Wall. Play this strategy right and you can keep it from ever getting further into its attack pattern than Erupt. This doesn't make you invincible, though; Omega will still very much counterattack you as the others deal damage to it, so have someone like Rosa or Porom heal as needed.

As you deplete its HP the second time, Omega will start countering you with Beam and later Maser when you attack it. Wall means you have to use summons or non-reflectable spells to hit it. Throwing with Edge, Focus with Yang or Jumping with Kain is your most reliable source of damage. When the boss starts countering with physical attacks (which can inflict Charm), it is in its final phase.

Eventually when Omega's HP drops under 32,768, the music will change and the screen will darken. Omega will tremble and a countdown from 3 will appear. When the countdown finishes it will use Atomic Ray on your whole party (this is new to V32), which will probably wipe you unless you maxed your magic defense with buffs earlier in the fight, then Vitalize, and then count down again. When its HP drops under 16,384, the next action it takes, regardless of where it is in the countdown, is to use Fission and explode to nail your whole party with an unblockable attack based on its current HP. To survive this you can do one or more of the following:

  • Have a high-level and high-HP character like Cecil or Yang at max HP;
  • Hide with Edward or Leap with Kain and stay offscreen while it explodes;
  • Rush it down with powerful attacks to deplete its HP before it can explode.

Unless you're on New Game + you are probably not going to be able to do enough damage to kill Omega before it detonates, but try to do as much damage per attack as you can anyway to lessen the blow from Fission. If it Atomic Rays you instead and you survive it, you can probably kill it in time before it finishes another countdown. Like Shinryu, maxing your defenses at the start of the fight can save you heartbreak at the end.

Charm protection recommended. Fire protection helps with Erupt and Heat Ray. 70-80+ Upper Tower of Babil, Omega Sector

Magma Golem

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Magma Golem.png Magma Golem will start the fight by using Crush which is an instant KO to a single character unless they can absorb Dark. Crush will continued to be used until the Flamedogs are destroyed and then he'll alternate between using Erupt (20% max HP-based Fire damage) and Lava Wave (high Fire damage + HP Sap).

Once the Dogs are destroyed, Magma Golem will cast Fire3 on itself to heal several thousand HP and then use Erupt followed by Lava Wave. During this time, it will counterattack anything that hits it with Erupt. After using both spells, Magma Golem will Recover the Flamedogs and begin using Crush again. If you’re able to quickly kill the Dogs, Magma Golem will only be able to use Crush once. However, if you time it right and use an item that does high-level Ice damage the second they are revived, Magma Golem will skip the use of Crush and go into his post-Dog routine. Bring as many IceBlasts and ArcticWinds as you can, they should deal sufficient damage to immediately kill the Dogs. The Golem can also be Slowed and this will help give you some breathing room to attack in between revivals (use Silk Webs to keep Rosa available to heal). The Golem is weak against Ice but if you have stronger spells that aren't Ice-elemental like Flare and Ultima, use those instead. Fire should be avoided as the Golem and Flamedogs will absorb it.

You can also cast Wall on Magma Golem to prevent it from self-healing but the reflected Fire3 spell will one-shot a character unless they're wearing equipment to offset the damage. Berserk will crank up the damage for physical attackers, but don't Berserk everyone; someone needs to stay available to quickly kill the Flamedogs or revive anyone who got killed.

For a basically bulletproof setup, bring Paladin Cecil, Kain and Edward in the party and equip them with a combination of the following:

  • Ice/Dragon Shield + Silver Helmet or Armor + Cursed/Omega Ring, OR
  • Silver Shield or Helmet + Ice/Dragon Armor + Cursed/Omega Ring.

Using these setups, these three characters cannot be harmed by Magma Golem at all as they can absorb both Dark and Fire. Only the Flamedogs' physical attacks can inflict any damage on them. The other characters who can't equip these things aren't so lucky (Silver Rings cannot be used for Dark resistance because you have to equip a Cursed/Omega Ring instead), but if you have another character equip the Merit Cap you can get an Ice/Dragon Shield + Silver Armor or Silver Shield + Ice/Dragon Armor on them along with a Cursed/Omega Ring to achieve the same effect. That gets you four out of five characters immune to the Golem; the fifth one will just have to take his/her chances with Crush. (Note that Adamant Armor does NOT let you absorb Fire as rather than resisting elements, it nullifies them, which the game treats differently.) If you've acquired a Lunar Helm already, it can also be used for Dark resistance for a character who couldn't equip the Silver equipment. Properly protected, you can beat the tar out of the Magma Golem with your strongest attacks at your leisure.

Ice weapons don't seem to deal much more damage than end-game weapons that produce Holy. Any gear that can offset Fire attacks will cause his post-Dog attacks to be much more manageable. 65-70+ Magma Ruins

Fire Dragon

115,070 - 131,069 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima v12 Fire Dragon.png The Fire Dragon has only two attacks but is absurdly fast and hits like a truck. It starts the fight with Dragon Breath which may knock up to 4,000 HP off the entire party and sets HP Sap. It follows with a physical that will deal inconsistent damage between 150-1,800, and then casts Dragon Breath again, and repeats for the rest of the fight. Try to bring as many All-Potions as you can scrounge up or trade for. The sheer amount of damage the Fire Dragon causes is likely more than Rosa and Cecil can heal even on a combined Cure4/Cure3, so Rydia may have to play defensive and summon Asura. Despite its name the dragon isn't weak to Ice either so trying to have her cast Ice 3 won't do more than a few thousand damage. To slow the boss down and stay competitive with it, bring some Silk Webs which can be farmed from Arachnes via Steal (Rosa can't afford to waste a turn casting Slow, she needs to heal everyone every turn). Get a Silk Web on it ASAP, ideally on the first turn you get. Avoid Fire or Lightning attacks, the dragon absorbs both.

Don't underestimate Edward's usefulness here. His ability to Salve high-powered healing items like X-Potions as well as stacking ElfCloaks to reduce damage will go a long way towards keeping you alive, but you'll have to train him up first as he needs to live long enough to be able to use the items. Cecil should also relentlessly spam Big Guard to boost both physical and magic defense (if he has Mighty Guard, use that instead for superior healing). If you can get around a dozen combined Salved ElfCloaks and Big Guards off, Dragon Breath will be manageable, but you have to survive that long. If your levels are high enough, you can get it down to double or even single-digit damage, allowing you to shift your focus to attacking. Revivals will need Life2 so if your healer has to take a turn off to revive someone use an All-Potion if necessary.

Cecil and Edward will be throwing buffs the entire fight; likewise for Rosa and Porom healing. Try to have a lot of powerful Throwing ammunition for Edge and keep him alive at all costs as he will be your primary damage dealer while everyone else tries to stay alive. Kain can contribute with Jump, but basic physicals won't do much damage, even from Cecil. Once you have sufficiently high magic defense that Dragon Breath won't annihilate you, you can shift Rydia to using strong, non-elemental spells like Nuke, Bio or summoning Bahamut; the same goes for Palom with Flare/Quasar. Yang, if he's in the party, can use Focus, but not until you've buffed your party's defenses sufficiently to survive its counters; until then, he's throwing healing items as necessary. Protect Rings are available as a steal from the boss, but Edge's turns are better utilized Throwing Ninja Stars or duplicated weapons for 6-8,000 damage.

Every time you hit the dragon it will counterattack; for the first part of the fight these will be physical attacks, then about halfway through the fight it will use Vitalize once to get several thousand HP back. When it drops under 16,384 HP (you will know because it will "shudder" like Zeromus does) it will silently heal its HP back to full, then start countering with Burst against single characters; anyone except a highly leveled Cecil will probably not survive it. When it is almost defeated, it will use Dragon Breath as a counterattack. This means you could potentially eat two Dragon Breaths in a row; carefully time your attacks so you've had a chance to heal back up before hitting it. Some luck is going to factor into this fight if you get bad rolls with Asura or the dragon focuses its counters on Edge or Rydia. Basically, treat this as a semi-turtling fight where you focus on survival until you can get your magic defense buffed up enough that Dragon Breath won't bother you. Do not try to bum rush the Fire Dragon or it will punish you, especially once its HP gets low.

Lots of Ninja Stars or high-powered weapons for Throwing and the best defensive gear you can get. Party-healing items are a must. Silk Webs to slow the boss down are also crucial. 75-80+ Volcano

Crystal Dragon

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima v27k Crystal Dragon.png Crystal Dragon (CD) has had its AI reworked as of V27 and you can no longer use Wall while fighting it. If you use Wall or a Veil item to put Wall status on anyone, CD will immediately remove it with Black Hole, then start using Eclipse to kill your party in short order. Make sure not to apply Wall to anyone.

The boss starts by slowing your whole team down with Slow, but even after multiple uses this doesn't seem to affect the battle much. He then casts White against the whole party (much stronger than Goddess' version). If you start the fight with a physical attack, CD will counter with Crush against all party members that deals heavy damage. Instead, start with a Black/White/Ninja spell (ideally Edge uses Atomic Bomb or Rydia uses Nuke). Magic attacks will cause him to say "Not Bad..." which means he now takes damage from physical attacks. If you cast another spell against him, the spell will fail. When you use a physical attack, ensure you use "Fight" and not something else (e.g. Jump, Focus) or CD will use Crush or Eclipse (the latter doing 14,999 to a single party member). When you hit him with a physical attack, CD will respond with "..." which means he's once again weak against magic. Any additional physical attack will miss. Continue to alternate between physical and magical attacks. During this time, CD will use Crystalize (1/2 of your characters' max HP, like a double Tsunami) then Gravity (1/6 of characters' max HP). He will then cast Black Hole on you, self-apply Fast, heal for 6,553 HP with Vitalize and return to the start of the pattern. With end-game weapons, anyone can attack during the physical stage, and while anyone can use magic, it's best left to Edge/Palom/Rydia (Rosa has higher charge times and should be healing and Kain's Storm causes little damage). Rydia can also heal with Asura while Cecil tanks and uses Cure 3/All-Potions. Don't worry if a spell procs when using a physical attack against CD, it won't mess his pattern up.

When the fight is near the end, CD will start countering for 14,999 damage to a single character which will heal him for the same amount. If he recovers enough HP, he'll go back into the aforementioned script (Physical/Magic). Use Decoys to prevent him from hitting the characters but be careful, as CD will use Black Hole to completely negate the Image status. Ideally, wait until he uses Black Hole, use 5 Decoys in a row, then start to pile on the damage. After he fails to hit you, he'll start with saying, "Not bad..." and then after more damage, "Not too bad at all". Each time he speaks, he's going to use Crystalize so pile on as much damage as you can, as fast as you can. This stage can be more easily won if you have someone (Cecil is best) use a Megalixir so everyone else can do as much damage as possible. If you're able to survive a few rounds of this, you'll win. Bear in mind when he goes into this final phase, whatever immunity he last had is the immunity he keeps until he manages to heal himself back into his regular pattern or you successfully kill him.

Edward is massively helpful here since he can stick Image status on everyone at once via a Salved Decoy or E-Mantle, freeing everyone else to attack and not get into a loop where everyone Decoys up only to be Black Hole'd back to where you started minus several thousand HP from Crystalize.

If you have had it with the shifting weaknesses and troll counters and don't appreciate being toyed with by the boss, there is a functional but slightly risky way to rush the Crystal Dragon down quickly. Bring a party that includes DK Cecil, Yang, Edge and Edward and make sure all of them are equipped with Cursed/Omega Rings plus Dark-resistant equipment; Silver Armor, Shield or Helmet for Edward and Lunar Shield or Merit Cap + Silver Armor for the others (this may require beating other bosses prior to CD). The fifth character doesn't really matter although Kain works well as he can equip Silver equipment. Have DK Cecil use Bane (ideally with Caladbolg equipped), Yang use Focus and Edge use Throw. All of these attacks will provoke a Crush counterattack which will get absorbed and massively heal you provided you had the correct equipment, and it won't make him change weaknesses so you can keep doing it. Edward should Salve a Decoy or E-Mantle so you'll be ready for the last-phase physical counterattacks and then Sing with the Loki Harp which will also provoke Crush; if Kain is the fifth character, do *not* use Jump, as it provokes Eclipse rather than Crush which you cannot absorb. He should instead run utility dispensing items and reviving those who couldn't absorb Crush, and avoid attacking the boss at all so as not to trigger weakness changes. As an added bonus, Silver equipment also resists Holy, so you will also get healed by CD's opening White. If you play this setup right you can drop CD before he ever gets far enough into his pattern to use Black Hole or Fast, much less Vitalize. On New Game + this is much easier to pull off as everyone has access to Lunar Helmets and Shields.

Irritatingly, the equipment and spells given by CD would have been immensely helpful for fighting against him in the first place.

End game equipment, including ultimate weapons from the other optional bosses. Dark-resistant equipment + Cursed/Omega Rings mandatory for the alternate strat. 75-85+ Crater Cave

Selene

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Selene.png As of Version 2022 it is no longer possible to fight this battle before the Giant of Babil, as you are now required to beat Goddess first.

The Selenes have completely maxed out attack power so any physical attack by one against a front-row character is probably going to deliver fatal damage to them. They also counter any magic cast against them with AoE Petrify, so if two characters use AoE spells in a row without healing or immunity you can wind up with a bunch of statues quickly. They will also counter Esper summons with a full party Charm, and non-Magic skills with Slap. They can use Cure 4 once their HP gets low; you can deny them the healing by casting Wall on them but bear in mind this will provoke a Petrify counter. When both Selenes are still alive but one gets low on HP, it will physically attack twice in a turn, probably killing two people. Their other trick is to use an attack that looks like Cecil's Dark Wave; it has had its formula adjusted and now hits for 800-900 damage to the whole party.

Edward can slam the door on this problem by using Salve with a Decoy or E-Mantle to make their physicals miss. (E-Mantle is better as it persists longer but Decoys are easier and cheaper to come by.) He's also good to deal huge AoE damage to them via Sing with the Loki Harp. If you don't have him in your party you will have to find other ways to mitigate the damage. The easiest strategy is to farm for 1 or 2 Adamant Armors and place them on Rosa and Rydia. They’ll take virtually no damage from any attack, be immune to Charm and Petrify, and if they both use a powerful AoE attack (Ultima and Bahamut), the fight will be over in moments. Golbez is also awesome in this fight because of Blue; two of the four possible attacks, Blaze and LitFlash, will deal max damage (16,383) to the Selenes, and SnowStorm will hit them for 13,107 damage; the fourth, Needle, will "only" deal about 4,000 damage but that's still a 75% chance of five-digit damage every turn. Anyone who doesn't have Adamant Armor equipped should be using HeadBands or Adamant Helms to avoid Charm. Alternatively Blink (Rosa, Kain) and Image (Edge) can be used to get Image status. Aegis Shield on Cecil, Kain and Edward is also good to avoid Petrify. Finally, it bears mentioning Yang can no-sell Selene's physicals with his upgraded Brace from the King of Fabul; he's actually a great option to tank in the front row while dispensing healing items, just make sure he has a HeadBand or Adamant Helm so he doesn't get Charmed.

(An old strat if you didn't have Edward with you was to have Cecil use an E-Mantle immediately and when party members got killed by a Selene, revive them with Life potions or a weak Life spell and he would auto-Cover them while they're in critical HP, taking no damage because of the E-Mantle. Because of the change to Dark Wave's damage formula, that strategy is no longer viable as it will now deal enough damage to easily kill party members in critical HP.)

Kill all of the Artemis first and begin using strong, AoE attacks against both Selenes. If you ignore an Artemis, they'll self-explode dealing high damage to a single character. As of V32 the Artemis have received a massive HP upgrade (6,700 HP) so they may not die to a single Bahamut cast. Get rid of them as fast as you can without jeopardizing the fight so they can't kamikaze the party.

You can also alternate single-target attacks such as Nuke, Focus and Throw against the two Selenes if you don't want to go the AoE route or you don't have the right party for it. If you use this tactic, you'll have to ensure that both Selenes die at the same time or the one left standing will use Eclipse, which deals 14,999 damage to a character regardless of equipment and is unblockable. If more than two characters are standing, Selene will Charm the entire team (i.e. anyone who's not immune) and drop them with Eclipse. This means if only one character is immune to Charm, this tactic is more risky because it would require someone to get off a spell before Eclipse is used. Watch the damage carefully and if you see one Selene taking more damage than the other, use a physical attack to offset the delta (difference) in HP.

Again, if one Selene dies before the other, focus fire on the survivor immediately before Eclipse can make an appearance.

Adamant Armor for the "easy" strat or end-game equipment otherwise. Glass Helmets can help offset Selene's physical attacks. You want Charm immunity at minimum; having Stone immunity too is ideal. 70+ Crystal Spire

The Crystals

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Crystalle.png The Crystals will start by using Digest which can cause mild or high damage and HP Sap (equipment depending) on up to 4 characters. Once complete, they'll start using Blaster which can be an instant KO but level/equipment depending, will often miss. During the 3rd round the Crystals will use Absorb which heals 14,999 damage, followed-up by Glance and Foul Odor (Confuse/Charm and multiple status aliments respectively). The final round that can be predicted will be them attacking a character for max damage and healing for the same (they also inflict every single status ailment with their physical attack but it doesn't matter because the raw damage kills you anyway).

The next rounds can be them starting their pattern over, using Hex, hitting with a 2-step attack (Crush which is an instant KO then Condemn), or MegaFlare which hits for 14,999 damage per character. As of V22 the Crystals can go into Crush much earlier if you've destroyed one of them. If they drop below 16384 HP, they will start immediately using Crush followed by Vitalize, either on themselves or on one of the other Crystals. Do not under any circumstance leave only one Crystal alive. It will Crush your entire party immediately for an instant game over.

The first few rounds are pretty easy, especially if Blaster misses all 4 times. Rydia can cast Bahamut, Rosa/Porom uses Ultima, Edge uses Flash Bomb, Kain uses Highwind, and Cecil uses MT attack items like VoidStones or M-Cannons. Once the Crystals start using Glance and Foul Odor, have all the characters use Decoys, E-Mantles or LunarVeils (if Edward isn't in the party), causing the attack/recovery stage of the Crystals to yield no damage/recovery. Continue to have Kain use Highwind, Cecil act as a tank, Rydia use Bahamut, Rosa Ultima, and Edge Flash Bomb. Palom can cast Quasar, Edward can protect everyone with a Salved LunarVeil and then Sing, but Yang is just not well suited for this fight as Kick isn't strong enough to damage the Crystals.

The next best course of action is to have everyone start using Lunar/LightVeils. With a bit of luck, all 4 will start using MegaFlare which will reflect for 14,999 damage apiece. If you've managed to do enough damage during the first few rounds, this will end the fight. If the Crystals start using Crush/Condemn, you may still be able to pull off a win if you can bring people back and still reflect MegaFlare.

This fight can take a bit of luck but can be won. If you're feeling a bit vindictive, you are able to battle them as many times as you want: do so after you've opened the final item shop and loaded everyone to the brim. Edward with a Salved LunarVeil completely shuts down both MegaFlare and the max damage physicals, leaving Crush as the only threat (and that can be shut down with Cursed Rings and Dark-resistant equipment).

You can actually pull this off pre-Giant of Babil if you have Fusoya and at least one LunarVeil. Have Fusoya use the LunarVeil on his first turn (try to have at least one more for one other person to use as well; the others should use LightVeils if they are still alive). Then have him use Blue and hope for good RNG. If you're lucky he will use Tornado, dropping all four of the Crystals to under 10 HP (ideally this will be right after they use Absorb). Then have anyone else still alive quickly follow with a fast, powerful non-elemental spell, summon or item (if you're using an item make it a strong one like a Stardust or VoidStone) to finish them all off at once. If you really want to be paranoid, equip Fusoya with the Merit Cap plus a Silver Shield or Armor and a Cursed Ring to let him absorb Crush, although this runs the risk of him getting Charmed by Glance.

There isn't any real benefit to doing this fight early, but you can do it if you want to get it out of the way. You can use the same strategy post-Giant with Golbez, although you will also have Edward at that point and you may find it easier to just damage and reflect them down the standard way.

Endgame gear though not much helps beyond Adamant Armor. Cursed Rings + any Dark-resisting equipment will max heal you from Crush. Charm protection is mandatory. 80+ Crystal Spire

Ultima Buster

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima UltimaB.png Ultima Buster uses the same pattern and attacks as Ultima Weapon, but it has much, much higher attack and defense. It starts the fight using Ultima (which may not hit everyone) and then quickly follows up with Meteo. Depending on your levels and RNG, this may end in a total KO or restart. For the beginning of the fight, the boss will use Nuke, Blaze, Crush (may not cause an instant KO), Virus, and Tsunami; all of these are stronger than the first battle, and should be expected to hit for 2,000-4,000 HP damage. It can also use a double physical attack and Whirlwind. When its HP is under half, it will go to a two-step attack of Whirlwind then Meteo followed by Vitalize. It counters magic and summons with Nuke and physicals in kind, switching to Blaze as a counter when its HP is below 1/3.

Ultima Buster likes to do its damage via counterattacks, so you want to hit it with the strongest stuff you have to minimize how many counters you will have to deal with. As much as possible, defense-ignoring attacks and spells such as Nuke, Flare and Throw should be utilized. Just like with Ultima Weapon, Golbez can wreak havoc on the boss with Blue; he has a 50% chance of five-digit damage with Snowstorm and Blaze. Physical attacks will provoke disproportionate retribution from Ultima Buster considering how little damage you will deal to it, so characters who cannot use defense-ignoring attacks or spells should focus on healing or applying Magic defense buffs. Get a Silk Web applied to the boss as soon as you safely can to slow it down and a Salved E-Mantle or Decoy will mitigate its physicals. Using Wall, Reflect or Light Veils on your party will let you bounce Nuke and Virus back onto the boss, but you will have to use Cure5, All-Potions or Asura for healing. When the boss goes into desperation mode, switch gears to a more aggressive attack to get it down before it can heal itself or wipe you.

All gear from the Lunar Subterrane/Core and any Super Boss-given equipment you may have. Meteo is Holy-elemental so pairing Holy resistance with Cursed Rings lets you absorb it. You can do the same with Blaze and Ice resistance. 75+ Inner Lunar Subterrane

Neo Bahamut

65,535 HP

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima Neo Bahamut.png If you have any Globe199s make sure to bring them in your inventory to this fight. What better time for 14,999 guaranteed damage than the toughest boss fight in the game?

Neo Bahamut's AI has been revised as of V27. Old strategies utilizing Wall to avoid counterattacks no longer work. If you use Wall or a Light/Lunar Veil on anyone in your party, Neo Bahamut will immediately TeraFlare you to death, so do not under any circumstances do this.

At the start of the fight Neo Bahamut does not take any damage. It will seem like your attacks are damaging him, but despite the damage numbers appearing his HP will not go down at all, so don't waste turns trying to attack him. Instead, start out piling as many buffs to your magic defense as you can: Salved ElfCloaks, MT Shell, Big Guard etc. while sticking a Slow on him with a Silk Web. Palom should be in the party and use Boast as many times as he can as it will boost his and Rydia's damage and also boosts everyone's Magic defense (it will not boost Rosa's damage, however). The Silk Web will prompt a GigaFlare counterattack but it will be a weak one. Neo Bahamut will shudder, attack physically a few times, then use GigaFlare ("I... will not hold back") and TeraFlare ("Brace yourself!"), with the former causing decent damage and the latter causing extremely high damage (bad RNG can end the battle quickly).

Ideally you'll survive GigaFlare and TeraFlare with only 1 or 2 people dropping. If you're really unlucky only a Hiding Edward will survive. Afterwards, get everyone back on their feet as quick as possible with a salved Life, while one of the survivors (or the first to get a turn if only Edward was left) quickly uses a Megalixir or All-Potion. Now he will actually take damage when you hit him. Start casting powerful spells with short cast times (Flare from Palom, Bio or Nuke from Rydia). Rosa can cast Holy as well, but it doesn't deal as much damage because it isn't boosted by Boast and it doesn't cast as fast. Stick to Mighty Guard from Cecil for now. Edward should keep applying Salved ElfCloaks to further increase your magic defense. Neo Bahamut will respond by saying "Interesting..." and attack physically a few times. Hopefully Palom and Rydia can both get two spells in before Neo Bahamut goes into recovery mode and uses Black Hole and Fast. When Cecil calls out that the party needs to regroup, take a second to make sure your HP is completely topped off with All-Potions/Megalixir/Cure5 and try to put a few more magic defense buffs on. He will say "..." and GigaFlare you a few times, then return to TeraFlare and restart the pattern.*

When he gets below 21,845 HP remaining, he will switch his counters from GigaFlare to TeraFlare, then TeraFlare you again on his next turn, and then heal himself for 6,553 HP with Vitalize. He can do this multiple times in a row depending on how many times you hit him without killing him. To get through this final phase, have Rydia and Palom queue up their fast spells again, alternating with full-party heals. If he starts using TeraFlare to counter, it means he's in his desperation phase, so the next character to act after them should use a Globe199 on the boss. That Globe199 has to kill him because he'll counter it with TeraFlare and you're going to die if he uses it since you're already weakened from the counter, but between the Wisdom boosts from Boast and decent damage rolls (Flare needs to deal more than 10,000 damage to be safe) the two spells should have been enough to get him under 15,000 HP and the Globe199 will seal the win for you.

  • One point of interest: if you don't attack him at all during his recovery mode, his TeraFlare will be 2x stronger and basically one-shot your party. Not sure if this was by design but you have to damage him when he uses GigaFlare to make the final TeraFlare survivable. Even if you attack him during the GigaFlare phase, he still has the ability do 6-8,000 points of damage which is much stronger than previous uses. Still trying to understand the logic behind how damage is calculated.

Mid-high 90s levels are recommended because you need to be able to hit as hard as you can with every attack. However, with the right strategy, he can be beat at a much lower level as showcased by player Smbai: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xZvfz9YAbI (video is from V30)
